I will be the first one to stand up and say I love Jon and Kate. The thought of them splitting up is heartbreaking. I use to be interested in watching a show about a real life family, who had been through such an incredible experience. My family is sick of reality TV, and I am sorry to say, I can’t blame them. After all, we are spending too much time watching other families live, and not enough time living ourselves. The current scandal that is happening to the Gosselin family is highly attributed to the success of their reality TV show on TLC, Jon and Kate Plus 8. First you have to understand that fame and fortune from reality TV changes people.

No matter who you are, or where you live, once you get a taste of fame and fortune, it goes to your head. You feel powerful. You want more. You crave more.

If you watch the first episodes of Jon and Kate, right after the sextuplets were born, you will see a normal family that is thankful for each other. They act normal, they want to do normal family things. They are grateful that they were capable of moving to a bigger home which they desperately needed. They showed emotion and love towards each other and the kids. Kate use to act like she was down to earth and many young mothers looked up to her and admired her. Now, Kate only shows sarcasm, and irritation with pretty much everyone on the show including the kids. When she does try to show that she cares, it looks like an act. She just doesn’t seem to be able to let her true feeling show through any more. Kate acts snotty and spoiled. It is sad to see. Jon isn’t perfect either, in recent episodes his attitude is one that is saying, he is only there because he has to be, not because he wants to be. Troubled marriage or not, these are still his kids, and he needs to let his love for them show through.

The income from the reality show is making it difficult to put family first, before the money.

Jon and Kate have had the opportunity of a lifetime to be the stars of a once great reality television show. It is the most popular reality show on TLC. They all had to sacrifice a lot to allow camera crews into their home to film them on a daily basis. When Jon said enough is enough, Kate wasn’t having it. She was willing to sacrifice her relationship because she didn’t want to give up the show. Yes, that is a good source of income to raise their kids, but when you love someone, and your whole life is in jeopardy, most people would be willing to make the decision to sacrifice the show and keep the family. Even if Jon was being unfaithful to Kate, they should have postponed the show and tried to work on keeping their marriage. The public is not stupid, we all know that infidelity has played a big part in the problems that they are experiencing. Maybe on both sides. That is plain selfishness of both parents. Not a way to be thinking of the children.

Reality television shows aren’t for those who want to appear perfect.

When you agree to do a reality show for television, you are making the agreement to show people all over the world how you live. It is suppose to be reality. It is not suppose to paint a perfect picture of a life that no one lives. The Gosselin’s have tried so hard to appear that their life is so happy and perfect to the point that it is getting sickening. Even their family members have come forward telling tales of huge blowout fights and arguments that have happened off camera. The emotions and feeling towards one another show on camera, and the public is aware that something is not right. It is not a secret. People get mad, they make mistakes, they argue and they have marital problems. If Jon and Kate do not want the public to know what is happening with their life, then they need to break their contract with TLC and cancel the show. They are not giving America a reality TV show, they are blowing a bunch of smoke out of their behinds, hoping that the world will just keep watching. Jon is tired of painting a pretty picture and Kate appears that she wants to keep up the act. This is causing trouble on top of the infidelity issues. The problems just keep adding up and if the pressure of the show wasn’t there, it might be easier for the two of them to reach a solution.

How Fans Have Saved TV Shows

Fan campaigns to save cancelled, or soon-to-be-cancelled TV shows is nothing new.  While the internet has changed the way some of this works, it’s been going on for decades.

The granddaddy of the saved TV show is the original Star Trek, way back in the sixties.  Cancelled by NBC, a massive write-in campaign resulted in a first for fandom — a cancelled show put back on the schedule.  Unfortunately, Star Trek only lasted one more year, and frankly, that’s usually the story of saved shows.  They seem to have just one more year in them, but the networks make a lot of fans happy, and it saves them from having their entire schedule boycotted.

The next show to get a new life that I recall was Cagney and Lacey.  The rub here is that the producers not-so-covertly instigated the movement.  Their comments about the show’s status riled up the fans, who took their anger over the show’s impending cancellation to CBS.  It worked, and the crime drama continued.

After that save, write-in campaigns became more frequent.  Quantum Leap, for example, was saved from cancellation and went on for two more seasons.

Other shows also benefited from fan support, including Roswell.  In fact, it may have been the attempt to save the science fiction series that changed the shape of these campaigns.  To show their insistence that their favorite show not be cancelled, Roswell fans didn’t just write letters, they sent in bottles of Tabasco sauce.  Tabasco sauce was a favorite of the aliens.  This has spawned other fan efforts that have included a symbolic item to try and get their point across.

As an aside, this type of endeavor took on massive proportions not to save a TV show, but to save a character in the early 2000′s.  Michael Shanks had left Stargate SG-1, and the fans were not happy.  In fact, they were incensed.  They began the “Save Daniel Jackson” campaign, and it was indeed huge. They wrote letters to everyone who had any association to the show — networks, sponsors, producers.  Not only that, they took out full page ads in the Hollywod trade papers.  This was not cheap.  They also generated a ton of attention.  The result?  Shanks was back the next season.

While the efforts to get Shanks back on Stargate SG-1 was massive, it wasn’t the first.  Years before, fans had gathered outside of Burbank Studios to protest the killing of Doctor Marlena Evans on Days of our Lives.  It was basically a one-time event, but for its day, it was worthy of making the news.  What the fans didn’t know, though, is that it was all just a publicity stunt of sorts.  Marlena was alive and well; it was her twin sister who’d been murdered.  Actress Deidre Hall was simply on vacation until it came time to do the big reveal.

That acknowledgement made,  I truly believe the Save Daniel Jackson movement was the most well-oiled fan campaign in the history of television, even surpassing the Star Trek fete.  It was amazing what these people did.

Back to the main focus of TV shows, more recently Jericho was saved, but the fans didn’t show up to watch, and it was cancelled again.  Scrubs was saved by changing networks.  Just one week before this article is being written, NBC cancelled Medium, which was picked up within a few days by CBS, thus negating any need for a fan campaign.  In some way, shape, or form, Family Guy, Arrested Development, Veronica Mars, Twin Peaks, and Designing Women were affected by write-in support of their fans.  Not just that, but taking the tools learned from the Save Daniel Jackson movement, fans ignited the Save Carson Beckett campaign and succeeded in getting the once-dead-and-killed-off doctor back on Stargate Atlantis on a limited basis.  These folks actually upped the stakes by having a rally in front of Bridge Studios where the show was filmed and notifying the media, which showed up.

The landscape of the fan campaign has changed.  The internet has become a tool to unite people, and there are now more possibilities, such as what happened with the soap opera, Passions.  NBC cancelled it and DirecTV picked it up.  Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if a show succeeds in staying on the air for one year or for ten more years; it’s just that the fans’ voice is heard, and the show continues beyond what it would have otherwise.  Clearly, when done effectively, the networks do listen.

Viewers across the country first fell in love with the lead actress, Elizabeth Ann Reaser when she guest starred all last season on Greys Anatomy, but unfortunately the premise for The Ex List makes it a single season program or maybe a female version of My Name Is Earl. And while that shows plotline is too simple, My Own Worst Enemy is easily the exact opposite. Superstar Christian Slater plays the lead character on the NBC drama that is being called sloppy and confusing. Slater though, is great and will surely move onto other huge ventures.
